EARMA 2023: Widening and Deepening of the RMA Profession

The "Widening and Deepening of the Research Management Profession Conference" organized by the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA), took place in Prague, Czech Republic, from April 24th to 26th, 2023, with the participation of over 1400 research managers involved in project management processes.

Prof. Bekir Kayacan, the coordinator of Istanbul University's International Projects Office (IPO), along with the deputy coordinators Prof. Gürel Çetin, Assist. Prof. Evren Türkmenoğlu, and office staff members Dr. Sezgi Erdoğan, Zeynep İlay Dündar, Funda Alkan, and Şaban Çaytaş attended the conference. They presented a paper titled "Structuring the National Research Administrators Association of Türkiye: TARMA". Additionally, Prof. Gürel Çetin moderated a session titled "Twinning for widening & deepening RMA skills," aiming to expand and deepen the skills of research managers.

This study, aiming to examine the possibilities of establishing a research management organization in Turkey, is based on in-depth interviews and workshops conducted by the IU IPO with research managers in Türkiye. The paper also provides recommendations to increase the recognition of the research management profession, contribute to its development, and offer suggestions for Turkish research managers to collaborate, especially in European Union project processes. The paper discusses potential steps that can be taken in the future to establish a research management organization in Türkiye.

The focus of this year's EARMA conference was on the 17th Action Plan of the European Research Area (ERA).

Since 2000, the European Research Area (ERA) developed by the European Union to enhance research and scientific processes, has been focusing on the 17th Action Plan adopted by the European Commission. This plan aims to strengthen the strategic capacity of organizations that conduct and finance public research in Europe. The presentations at the conference mainly centered around this action plan. With this action plan, the European Commission envisages strengthening the strategic capacity of research managers in skill development, recognition, networking, and capacity building areas.

The International Projects Office actively participated in panels, creating collaboration opportunities for European Union projects that can be implemented at our university.

The conference was not only about presentations and briefings; it also provided opportunities for participants to meet and share experiences through various activities. The IPO also held meetings with leading institutions and organizations in the field of European Union projects, establishing relationships for future project collaborations.
