"Research Management Workshop", which is a first in Türkiye in terms of its content, was held at Istanbul University
The Research Management Workshop was held by Istanbul University (IU) International Projects Office on March 17, 2023, at the IU Rectorate Building Blue Hall.
Prof. Mahmut Ak, Rector of Istanbul University, and IU International Projects Office Coordinator Prof. Bekir Kayacan delivered the opening speeches. Prof. Ak, greeting the participants, began his speech by stating, "Undoubtedly, the responsibility of conducting research is an area where the competencies of academics under educational duty can be most vividly and visibly reflected." He mentioned that Istanbul University ranks fifth among the twenty research universities in Turkey, highlighting the responsibilities associated with this ranking. Prof. Ak emphasized the importance of pioneering studies and stated, "We believe that the effectiveness of these studies can only be ensured through collaboration with external stakeholders, and if possible, international stakeholders." He continued, "Today, we are also in a utilitarian mindset institutionally," and added, "I would like to express that we will benefit from the valuable ideas of many researchers from various institutions and work to make our structure more efficient." He thanked the participants and left the platform.
A First in Turkey in Terms of Content
Prof. Bekir Kayacan stated, "The workshop we are holding here today is a first in our country both in terms of its ultimate goal and its content," and added, "We hope that it will serve as a precursor and a pioneering function in the near future." Pointing out that research management is not yet perceived as a profession in Türkiye, Prof. Kayacan said, "Research management or administration will be discussed by you esteemed participants today," and then continued, "The first step towards the establishment of a national research management organization or association on a country scale will be generally taken."
The workshop concluded with closing remarks by Prof. Kayacan, where discussions about research management as a profession, and research management worldwide, and national research management organizations were held. Expressing his gratitude to the participants, Prof. Kayacan stated, "Today's meeting is not held just to mark an event," adding that it may be repeated, aiming for concrete platforms or specific status to reach an organization in the future. The event continued with sessions following the closing remarks.
